Austin A. Coates is a professional studio artist born and raised in the Santa Cruz mountains of California and now living near Portland, Oregon. He has created fine art from a very young age and developed his craft through years of intensive training. His interest began with a love for the tactile experience of painting materials, attending workshops in art supply stores even before high school. This affinity led him towards studying animation and illustration, eventually finding his love of painting best embodied in the study of Studio Art. He has studied at San Jose State University and George Fox University, and has continued his education through workshops and private study.
“My great hope is for my art to be personally revelatory, providing a perspective that brings you to a space which enables you to contemplate the things that are larger than ourselves and our day-to-day experiences.”
His early exposure to the artists and ideas of the California Impressionism Movement have given him a focus on accurate representation using expressive brushwork. He primarily paints in oil, watercolor and gouache, often working in plein air.
