Austin A. Coates is a Christian artist currently based in Newberg, Oregon. Austin's work bridges a classical aesthetic with contemporary experimentation, combining time-honored training and spirit-driven curiosity to create fine artworks that reflect the beauty of nature, the power of mindfulness, and the deep workings of God. He challenges viewers to see the weight of eternity in a landscape, to hear the silent soul of a neighbor, and to know the crucial purpose of a bouquet of flowers.
Alongside his studio practice, Austin is an approachable and engaging teacher and mentor. He has taught workshops and short-term courses designed for elementary, middle school and high school students at the Chehalem Cultural center and teaches art George Fox University as an adjunct professor.
Perhaps more than any of that, however, Austin is a husband, a father of a 3 year-old daughter (and another on the way!), and an earnest follower of Christ. His art-making practice is carefully balanced with love for his family to live meaningfully in community and grow vibrant, healthy, caring relationships.
